The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
