British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
