Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
